  3. <hi style=afpcap>The Hughes Tool Company experimented with a number of radical designs including the twin-boom Model D-2 which was allocated the designation F-11. Two prototypes were ordered in 1944 with the first performing its maiden flight in July 1946. The aircraft was designed to perform photo reconnaissance, as the F prefix to the designation was not changed to fighter until 1948. </hi>
